These centrifugal dredge pumps rely on impeller rotation. As the motor rotates the shaft, the impeller blades use a curved action to send the slurry mixture out via the pump housing and pump casings. However, in a dredge pump, the impeller must be capable of imparting this energy while pumping the slurry, a mixture of water and solid particles, that would render the operating gear of a standard pump impeller useless within hours.
